Problem finding is important because most of us tend to be solution minded rather than problem-minded (Maier, 1963). Through conditioning in our institutions and within society, we have been trained to think of solutions to problems. The simple equation presented to us is: "Here is the problem, now you come up with solution." We tend to treat most of the problems we face as givens. The solution becomes our primary goal when, in fact, the problem is really where we should be directing our efforts. As Thelen (1972) notes in the discussing the educational system, schools tend to view education as "a process that only begins with someone else's statement of the problem."
